My husband was awarded his disability payment on March 29, 2016 a direct deposit of one lump sum payment for back pay of disability. We found on the SSA website under his account.

The employee who issued this direct deposit transposed the last 2 numbers of our bank account. The incompetency is I spoke to 7 different agents when I had asked to speak to one manager or supervisor with one number to call back. Each time I call it is anywhere from 30-55 minute wait. They filed a non-receipt of funds or tracer and told me it will take 3-7 days before we will see the money.

We called on the 7th day and no one called us to let us know the non-receipt was rejected. I spoke to another agent who was very rude a Mr. Nash and he said there is nothing they can do they will have to wait until the bank sends back the money. I said does it show if the bank was contacted and he said no.

I told the agent the bank has to be notified of the error they need some paperwork to send back the money. The agent said call your bank and click. How rude! I did call my bank and they said I had to call SSA back because they need SSA to request the money back????

I tried telling this agent I worked for a bank. My bank said "By Law" if money is direct deposit with a valid account number the account does not match the name it will be credited because the account is valid and the user of the account has access to these funds. Could this be why we are in a deficit? Finally, I found an agent who sounded like he knows what he is doing and said the non-receipt that was sent through was rejected.

We had been checking for 7 days. He tells us now it should take up to another 7 days. Luckily I was given the account number, spoke to my bank and they seem to be very helpful and told me they will contact the owner of the account the funds were credited and let the person know they are charging back this money. This is a nightmare.

No one on SSA was doing researching or was trying to get back our money. They are thinking the bank is automatically going to send back the money because of wrong name or wrong account. This is not the case. SSA needs to improve their payment department at the Treasury.

People such as my husband and I were suffering for 4 years and was short changed. SSA needs to have more compassion for the people who need this money. One way to improve their service is to double check their entries before sending off to the clearing house and making sure everything matches up. This one mistake has cost us frustration, being upset and irate.

This is not even my error and I am the one working to get my husband's award and getting the SSA and my bank in doing something and it was one person's error. Unfortunately, I was told there was another account holder that called in and again SSA gave the wrong account number and the person of that wrong account account number spent all the money. The recipient who was waiting for this money will now have to wait again to get their money.

I hope this does not happen to us.
